Mirza’s charges should not be ignored: JI

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Syed Munawwar Hasan said allegations levelled by Zulfiqar Mirza were very serious and should not be ignored. Talking to the media at Mansoorah after the Eid prayers, as per a press release, he said the Supreme Court had already taken notice of the matter and should summon Mirza as a witness.

He said the rulers were US slaves and advancing the American agenda. The JI chief said conditions were being created in the country akin to the fall of Dhaka. Earlier, in his address to the Eid congregation at the Mansoorah mosque, Munawwar Hasan reiterated that the war on terror was not our war, it was a US war and owning it would only darken Pakistan’s future.

He advised the rulers to pull out of this war forthwith and drone attacks would stop with that. He said the chief of the air staff had said that PAF could down the drones but the JI chief wondered why the government was not allowing it. He said only if the Nato supplies were cut off, the drone attacks would stop. However, instead of this, the government was giving more facilities to the Nato. No other nation in the world would facilitate its enemy in such a manner, he added.

The JI chief said that situation in Karachi was being worsened deliberately to complete the enemy agenda. Similarly, there was a plot to tear apart the mineral rich Balochistan from this country so that the enemy could grab it. He said as long as the people voted for MQM, target killings and extortion would continue. Therefore, it was a high time for the people of Karachi and Hyderabad not to vote for the MQM, he added.

Syed Munawwar Hasan said the biggest problem of the Pakistani nation was US slavery. He said if being a Muslim was terrorism, then 18o million Pakistanis were terrorists. He said the JI firmly believed that the democratic process was bringing about a change in the country. However, if the deprivations of the people continued and they lost faith in the process, they could take up arms, which would have dangerous consequences. He announced the JI would hold a referendum against the US on Sept 30 and later stage a sit-in against loadshedding, drone attacks, price hike and US slavery, on October 2.

Zulfiqar Mirza’s utterances can’t be refuted: PPP leader

NOWSHERA: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Secretary and Excise and Taxation Minister Liaqat Shabab has said the claims made by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza could not be refuted as he spoke while taking oath on the Holy Quran.

Talking to party workers and reporters on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, he said Dr Zulfiqar Mirza’s assertions had greater significance than the May 2 incident at Abbottabad, a reference to the action by the US Navy SEALs that led to the killing of al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, and the Mehran Base attack in Karachi.

He said now the ball was in the court of the Army, media and government to respond to the disclosures made by former Sindh home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.

Liaqat Shabab said the press conference by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza in Karachi was against the party’s discipline and the PPP had to take action against him, yet the disclosures made by him could not be undermined keeping the national interest in view.

“The press conference addressed by the PPP leader was a reference to the conspiracies being hatched against Pakistan,” he said while talking about the serious allegations levelled by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain and Federal Interior Minister Rahman Malik.

Liaqat Shabab argued that PPP’s rivals also acknowledged PPP Co-chairman President Asif Ali Zardari’s spirit of tolerance and compromises made in the larger interest of the country as envisioned by the slain party leader Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.

He added that the fate of Interior Minister Rahman Malik would be decided by the PPP’s Central Executive Committee in case he had done anything detrimental to the national interest. Asked whether Zulfiqar Mirza was authorised to speak to the media on the issue, he said, the PPP leader said the disclosures made by him might be evaluated and scrutinised.

Arresting target killers: Malik warned me to stop or army will topple govt, says Mirza

The grave allegations continue to trickle in as Zulfiqar Mirza’s travelling political spectacle gains popular momentum.

At a massive public gathering in Lyari on Friday, the former home minister claimed he had apprehended target killers from ‘sector offices’ with heavy arms and ammunition but had to release them on Rehman Malik’s orders.

In a fiery speech at the end of a several-hour-long rally across the city, Mirza alleged that Malik had warned him that the army and the Inter-Services Intelligence would topple the government if target killers were arrested.

“I released the killers because I wanted to see Pakistan flourish,” Mirza said to an enthralled audience.

Calling the federal interior minister a “Jewish and an American agent working to destroy Pakistan,” Mirza said Malik’s “drama would continue until the disintegration of Pakistan.”

Malik used to misinform Benazir Bhutto earlier and he is doing the same with the president and prime minister now, Mirza alleged.

In a brazen call to arms, Mirza said he was ‘proud’ to have issued 300,000 weapon licences during his tenure.

“I gave the arms licences to the people of Karachi, not for aerial firing at wedding ceremonies but for times like these when no one is safe,” he said.

Expletives galore

Mirza’s public gathering in Lyari, termed the largest since Benazir’s rally in the area in 1987, was also addressed by chief of Sindh Nationalist Party (SNP) Ameer Bhumbhro and key leaders of the defunct People’s Amn Committee Uzair and Zafar Baloch.

Bhumbhro’s platitudes were followed by an initially-hesitant Zafar Baloch who went on to deliver an expletive-laden tirade against dictators, Rehman Malik and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Uzair Baloch followed, expressing his dissatisfaction at the provincial PPP leadership for conducting an operation in Lyari.

He also blamed former MNA Nabeel Gabol, elected from Lyari, for the negative image of the area.

Procession to Lyari

Earlier in the day, Mirza was taken to Lyari from Bin Qasim town in a massive procession organised by his followers – who were armed to the teeth and displayed automatic weapons openly.

Supporters bearing flags of SNP, Awami National Party, Punjabi Pukhtoon Ittehad (PPI) and the PPP accompanied the procession.

The procession reached the venue, Chakiwara Chowk in Lyari, around 8pm.

Invoking ethnic sentiments

Earlier, playing to the gallery in his home constituency, Mirza said the “time has gone when Sindhis were killed … the soldiers of Benazir Bhutto will not let this happen [any more].”

“For every innocent life taken in Karachi, five looters and terrorists would be killed,” Mirza said while addressing a press conference at his residence in Badin.

“I have given courage to millions of people to speak up and stand against the tyranny,” he said, and appealed to ‘the people of Sindh’ to use [arms] to save Pakistan’.

Anti-MQM diatribe

Continuing his tirade against the MQM, Mirza said reconciliation is ‘not possible with a political party that is trying to break Pakistan.’

He admitted to sponsoring a website where ‘all evidence against the MQM will be uploaded.’

“I am yet to unveil 90 percent of the information I have,” he said.

“Ishratul Ebad is the most corrupt governor the province ever had,” Mirza alleged, adding that chairman Malir Development Authority had admitted during an investigation that Ebad was his partner in the project and was allotted 27,000 plots in the scheme.

He added that he had turned down MQM’s request for inducting 6,000 ‘criminals’ in the police force.

Friendly fire

Turning the guns against his former colleagues, Mirza criticised Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah for promptly accepting his resignation, saying the speed negated the general impression that Shah was a lazy person.

Mirza also said he would expose the name of the “airhostess” for whom Rehman Malik visits Karachi frequently.

Earlier, Malik had directed Inspector General Sindh Police to depute a senior officer to protect Mirza’s rally. Bringing out a rally is a right of every citizen or political leader and it was the duty of law enforcers to protect them, Malik had said.

If Mirza is right, MQM could be banned, says ex-EC official

ISLAMABAD: If the allegations levelled against the MQM and its chief Altaf Hussain by Zulfiqar Mirza are established, it would lead to the dissolution of the party besides immediate disqualification of all its MPs from all national and provincial elected houses.

Former secretary Election Commission Kanwar Dilshad told The News that the Political Parties Order 2002 does not allow any political activity by any political party that is involved in anti-state activities.

Mirza, in his allegations while holding the Quran over his head, had charged the MQM and its chief of working on a US conspiracy to break up Pakistan. The MQM is also alleged to have written to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and sought the dissolution of the ISI.

These allegations have not yet been probed or established but, according to Kanwar Dilshad, the Political Parties Order 2002 unambiguously speaks against any political party involved in anti-state activities. In pursuance of such matter, he explained that the Political Parties Order 2002, Article 15 & 16 state:-

Article 15:

“Dissolution of a political party.- (1) Where the Federal Government is satisfied that a political party is a foreign-aided party or has been formed or is operating in a manner prejudicial to the sovereignty or integrity of Pakistan or is indulging in terrorism, it shall make such declaration by a notification in the Official Gazette.

(2) Within fifteen days of making a declaration under clause (1), the Federal Government shall refer the matter to the Supreme Court whose decision on such reference shall be final.

(3) Where the Supreme Court upholds the declaration made against a political party under clause (1), such party shall stand dissolved forthwith”.

Article 16:

“Effects of Dissolution of political party.- (1) Where a political party is dissolved under Article 15, any member of such political party, if he is a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or a Provincial Assembly, shall be disqualified for the remaining term to be a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or as the case may be, the Provincial Assembly, unless before the final decision of the Supreme Court, he resigns from the membership of the party and publicly announces his disassociation with such political party.

(2) A person becoming disqualified from being a member of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or Provincial Assembly under clause (1) shall not participate in election for any elective office or any legislative body till the expiry of four years from the date of his disqualification from being a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or, as the case may be, the Provincial Assembly.

(3) The order of members of a political party becoming disqualified from being members of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) or Provincial Assembly on its dissolution shall be notified in the official gazette.”

Dilshad recalled that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had banned the National Awami Party, headed by Wali Khan, on the basis that they had connection with Iraq and Russia in order to disintegrate Balochistan. The Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Hamood-ur-Rehman, had accepted the federal government’s point of view and banned the party and this decision was still valid.
