Zulfiqar Mirza resigns from Sindh Assembly, blasts MQM

Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Senior Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza on Sunday announced his resignation from his party post as vice president of PPP Sindh chapter as well as membership of the Sindh Assembly.

Addressing a crowded press conference at the Karachi Press Club, he expressed serious reservations on
the policy of government about the law and order situation in Karachi.

He said he would continue to work as an ordinary party worker. He harshly criticized Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and termed him a compulsive liar and a threat to Pakistan’s security.

He said he had already told his party leadership that Malik could not be relied upon. He said that only one person is responsible for all killings in Karachi and that person is Rehman Malik.

Mirza leveled serious allegations on Muttahida Quami Movement and its chief Altaf Hussain. He termed the MQM and its head responsible for target killings in Karachi. He accused the Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad of patronizing target killers.

He revealed that the police department was highly corrupt and that police stations in Karachi are being auctioned to the highest bidders.

Zulfiqar Mirza alleged that during a meeting in London MQM chief Altaf Hussain had told him that America and world powers had decided to break up Pakistan and he (Altaf Hussain) had supported their idea.

He claimed that Altaf Hussain had demanded disbanding of ISI. He further alleged that MQM was patronizing killers and criminals. He also claimed that journalist Wali Khan Baber was also killed by the MQM.

He said he was sorry for his earlier comments for the people who had migrated from India. He said he respects Urdu speaking people and that many of his close relatives are also Urdu speaking.

He said that those people who want to breakup Pakistan are pitiful. He hoped that the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would summon him in the hearing of the case regarding Karachi target killings.

Zulfiqar Mirza said that he would remain a loyal worker of the PPP. He said if something happened to him those behind the Karachi killings and those behind the murder of Dr Imran Farooq would be responsible for it. He said that he would spend the rest of his life fighting for the rights of the oppressed people of Sindh.

Altaf Hussain caught escaping to South Africa?

London: Altaf Hussain self exiled leader of MQM-A caught escaping to South Africa by the authorities. According to sources, ‘Altaf Hussain was hiding in the Wrexham area close to Slough in Berkshire for the past few days. He was stopped when was going to Heathrow Airport in a private taxi. Interestingly the taxi driver was a Pakistani whom Mr Hussain thought as an English man due to his appearance.

According to sources Altaf Hussain told the authorities that, ‘he is leaving UK and going to South Africa for security reasons and personal protection’. According to sources he was told that, ‘security can be provided to him in the UK’. It is not yet clear if Mr Hussain detained or taken in protective custody. Mr Altaf Hussain is a British Citizen and living in self imposed exile since 1992.  He is never been to Pakistan since 1992, not a registered voter now and never voted in any elections ever since.

Earlier yesterday it was reported that British police raided two addresses including an office of  MQM-A in London in connection with the on going murder investigation of Dr Imran Farooq. It is reported that police took the crucial evidence in custody including the carpets for forensic investigation.   According to reports 35 well trained officers of the Scotland Yard took part in the operation on Thursday 24th August 2011”.

It is reported that those MQM-A terrorists arrested in Karachi were actually coming from Colombo Sri Lanka and had connections with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq. The arrests took place as result of tip off from British authorities.

According to reports both Khalid Shamim and another MQM-A terrorists who were arrested in Karachi while arriving from Colombo actually called in to be eliminated in Karachi by their own party MQM-A.   They had crucial information related to Dr Imran Farooq’s murder as well as target killing cells in various countries including South Africa. They knew too much about the MQM-A illegal and terrorist activities and needed to be eliminated that is why they were called in Karachi. They are lucky to be alive in the custody of Pakistani authorities than killed by their own death squad

MQM responsible for unrest, killings in Karachi: Mohajir Qaumi Movement

MQM responsible for unrest, killings in Karachi: Ghauri

Staff Report

LAHORE: Mohajir Qaumi Movement Vice Chairman Shamshad Khan Ghauri has accused the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) for the unrest and killings in Karachi. He said this while addressing a press conference on Monday.

“The situation in Karachi is getting worse day by day and the whole city has become a slaughter house,” he said. Altaf Hussain requests for peace whereas in reality, his own party is responsible for the current unrest and target killings in Karachi, Ghauri claimed. MQM’s workers are being trained in South Africa by the Indian secret agency RAW, which is providing them with Israeli-made arms, a proof of which is Israeli arms and shells being recovered from places where such terror incidents took place, he said.

He said that MQM’s “armed terrorists” had installed iron gates at the entrances of Mohajir colonies just to stop entry of political workers, especially of their rival party Mohajir Qaumi Movement. “MQM has taken citizens as hostage after illegally occupying their properties,” Ghauri said, adding that the MQM had established a “state within a state”.

He said that peace could not be maintained until Altaf Hussain or law-enforcement agencies did not remove these iron gates and MQM’s checkposts at various points.

Police and law-enforcement agencies should be given full authority to deal with the criminals since most of the arrested target killers belonged to the MQM, Ghauri asserted, even adding that the MQM negotiated the release of these killers with the government through different meetings and pledged to support the government if its demands were met.

The MQM also asked the government not to send challans of these cases to the special courts, instead, the trials should take place in the civil courts, he informed. In these circumstances, Karachi police and law-enforcement agencies are helpless before the political high-ups, Ghauri said.

He also claimed that the MQM was terrorising journalists and the murder of Wali Khan Babar was its clear example, whose killers belonged to the MQM.

He said Karachi was a business hub and the government should save it by setting aside the “political under dealings” in order to halt the growing lawlessness and unrest.

Clash between MQM and MQM haqiqi in Karachi

KARACHI (Xinhua) – At least seven people were killed and a dozen other were injured on Friday as supporters of two groups from ethnic Urdu-speaking community clashed in some parts of the Pakistani port city of Karachi, police sources and witnesses said.

Armed activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Muhajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-Haqqiqi) exchanged fire in Malir district which later spread to Landhi area, police said.

The clashes started after the MQM-Haqqiqi group led by Afaq Ahmed resisted attempt by the MQM to take control of Kokhrapar area in Malir, which had been stronghold of Haqqiqi group. Five activists of MQM were killed in Malir.

In retaliation, the MQM supporters attacked the Haqqiqi men in Landhi and killed two of its supporters.

A total of 12 people from both sides were injured in clashes continued for several hours.

Witnesses said that the Haqqiqi men also occupied five offices of MQM in Malir area after the clash.

The paramilitary force and police failed to control the firing.

Markets were closed and transport off the road as the clashes started early morning.

Karachi, the capital of Sindh province and Pakistan’s commercial center, has seen series of ethnic and political violence in recent weeks.

Scores of people were killed and many more were injured in clashes earlier this month between ethnic Muhajir and Pashtuns.

With MQM silent, MRC grabs the headlines

KARACHI –  As violence raged in the city on Thursday, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) mysteriously stayed out of the picture but the Mohajir Rabita Council (MRC) issued statements and handled the political situation.
After Senior Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza’s outburst against MQM chief Altaf Hussain, the citizens witnessed the death of 16 innocent people while 18 more were injured and 36 vehicles burnt to ashes.
A protest wave started from Karachi, spreading to other parts of Sindh, but Altaf’s statement came as a sigh of relief for the citizens. He made an impassionate appeal to end the protest against the racial and highly-bigoted language used against the children of the founders of Pakistan, keeping in view the perilous situation of the country.
However, it was observed on Thursday that the MRC remained active throughout the day as the media also carried statements of the council’s leadership but the MQM leadership remained silent, even though the MQM does not recognise MRC as its subsidiary body; giving rise to the question: has the MRC became more powerful than the MQM?
On Thursday morning, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik apologised to Altaf on behalf of Mirza, but it was not the MQM leadership that rejected or accepted his apology, but the MRC came to the fore with its general secretary Arshad Siddiqui dismissing Malik’s apology and demanding that Mirza apologises to the MQM chief personally.
The MRC also demanded that President Asif Ali Zardari immediately removes Mirza from his post or he will be held responsible for the situation in the city. Then Mirza himself issued a statement seeking apology, but this time too the MRC came forward and rejected the senior minister’s apology, demanding that Mirza and Awami National Party (ANP)-Sindh President Shahi Syed leave Karachi within 48 hours, or the situation may not normalise.
The MRC, claiming to be a group of elders of the Mohajir community, became famous after issuing a list of ‘chauvinist journalists’ on March 23, 2007, naming journalists, writers and analysts, ‘working against the offspring of the Pakistan Movement leaders.’
Once again on Thursday, the MRC became active suddenly and started accepting or rejecting apologies. Observers say that as the MQM tries to spread to other parts of the country, it is avoiding confrontation and cannot speak against other linguistic groups openly. And that is why the MRC is being made active to play a linguistic role as not a single statement of MRC was contradicted by the MQM.

IFJ enraged by Muhajir Rabita Council threat to journalists

Mirza, Shahi Syed should leave Karachi or brace for protests: MCC

KARACHI: The Mohajir Coordination Council (MCC) said on Thursday that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Zulfiqar Mirza and Sindh Awami National Party (ANP) President Agha Shahi Syed must leave Karachi within 48 hours or the government should brace for serious protests.

Express 24/7 correspondent Shaheryar Mirza termed the MCC a small fringe element of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The ultimatum has been issued by the MCC in the wake of Zulfiqar Mirza’s statementsregarding MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

Secretary Mohajir Coordination Council Mohammad Arshad told the media in Karachi that the MCC rejects Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s apology and demands Zulfiqar Mirza’s removal over hurling insulting remarks agaisnt the MQM Chief.

Earlier, Rehman Malik distanced the PPP from the controversial statement issued by Zulfiqar Mirza.

Talking to the media in Islamabad, Rehman Malik said the PPP leadership disowns the statement and has demanded an explanation from Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah over the remarks.

Mirza has apologised for his remarks against the MQM.

In a statement released by the Sindh Ministry of Information, Mirza said that all Urdu-speaking people were his brothers and sisters and that he apologises for his statements against them.

Journalists get death threats

KARACHI, May 29: In what appears to be a direct death threat, bullets were found on Tuesday night in the cars of three senior journalists parked outside the Karachi Press Club.

The cars belonged to secretary-general of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Mazhar Abbas, Zarar Khan and photojournalist Asif Hussain. When the journalists opened their vehicles, each of them found a bullet wrapped in a brown paper envelope.

It may be pointed out that names of Mazhar Abbas and Zarar Khan had appeared in a statement of the Mohajir Rabita Council in which they were described as anti-Mohajir chauvanists.

The journalists immediately informed Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and IG Police Azhar A. Farooqi. An FIR was lodged with the police.

The Karachi Union of Journalists has strongly condemned death threats to the journalists and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice. It also demanded that the organisations whose names have appeared in this connection must publicly denounce and disassociate itself from such terrorist activities.

PUJ rally condemns threats to journalists

LAHORE, May 30: The Punjab Union of Journalists on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the Lahore Press Club to condemn death threats to three senior Karachi journalists.

A large number of city journalists carrying placards and banners urged the government to protect journalists. They also raised slogans against the MQM and the government.

The journalists given death threats included Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Secretary General Mazhar Abbas, Zarar Khan and Asif Hussain.

Speaking on the occasion, PUJ President Arif Hameed Bhatti and General Secretary Amer Raza urged the government to take stern action against the MQM, and ban it. It should also expose those disturbing peace in Karachi, they said.

They also urged the Punjab government to ban the entry of the members of the party into Punjab.

They said the union would give a call for a hunger strike if the government failed to protect journalists who would continue to perform their duty without caring for the consequences.

Meanwhile, in a statement the South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) expressed its anger over threats to the life and property of journalists in Karachi and Peshawar given by, what it said, different extremist organizations. It urged the Pakistani authorities to protect the journalists.

The statement issued by SAMC Regional Coordinator Husain Naqi here said the life threats to the three Karachi journalists came a week after a shadowy organization, The Mohajir Rabita Council with links to the MQM, a party that supports military ruler President Pervez Musharraf, issued a list of a dozen journalists, declaring them as enemies, it said.

It said on May 25 gunmen attacked the Peshawar home of Daily Times cartoonist Muhammad Zahoor at around 2am. Four-time winner of the All Pakistan Newspaper Society’s annual best cartoonist award, Zahoor had drawn many cartoons on the Supreme Court chief justice’s dismissal in recent weeks.

The home of Nasrullah Afridi, the Urdu language daily Mashriq in the Khyber Agency section of the Tribal Areas, came under grenade attack after death threats made against him five days earlier by the head of Lashkar-i-Islam.

“We believe it is a very serious threat to working journalists. It is an attempt to muzzle the free media. The government should arrest those behind the threats,” SAMC Chairperson N Ram and General Secretary Najam Sethi said.

They said journalists needed to know that they would be protected from threats or attack. “If the government fails to do so, we will be justified in believing that there is complicity of the government in the current campaign to harass journalists,” they said.

They said the Muhajir Rabita Council had issued a threatening statement on May 22 with a list of some 20 journalists it described as chauvinist and hostile to their movement
